Acknowledgement

After two decades of teaching College English, Kathy retired to North Georgia and worked toward publishing a book that rose from her grief over the loss of her son. It was a long journey from passing to publication and she thanks the many people who offered assistance to her.

She has the deepest appreciation for Warren Jones, Missy Jalovecky, Michelle Richard, Kate Kimbro, Fawn Sandberg, Romney Lewis, Rosemary Prebor, and Angie Pettera who helped with editing, encouragement and technology. She also thanks the women who graciously shared their stories with her: Jennifer, Mary, Hazel, Lucille, Linda, Shirley, Susan, Doreen, Dorothy, and Sharon.

Summary

This writing, born from one mother’s loss, speaks to other mothers who have lost children, exploring the continuing darkness, rage, guilt, questioning, loneliness and the other myriad emotions of deep grief.

Grasping for some sense of order and peace and the need to understand the death of her son, Kathy began conversations with other grieving mothers, reflecting on and writing about the constant struggles with grief.

The struggle, she learned, is not about curing the grief or returning to normal, but a painstaking process, of slowly, bit by bit, reinventing herself in this new world to leave the despair behind while holding on to her son.

Sometimes, it simply helps the grieving mother to know she is not alone.
